Are you overwhelmed by the recent demands for telebehavioral health with children and adolescents? Does the idea of even starting to do play therapy from a distance make your head spin? If so, come join us as we learn the skills and confidence necessary to be successful teleplay therapists with young clients. You will learn how to prepare, facilitate, reflect, and improve your teleplay therapy sessions. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask Dr. Tillman questions based upon her 6 years conducting tele-play therapy sessions with children.

Presenter Bio: Kathleen (KatySue) Tillman, PhD, is a Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychologist and Registered Play Therapist and is an experienced clinician, professor, researcher, professional presenter, and author. Dr. Tillman completed her pre-doctoral internship in child-clinical and pediatric psychology at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children through the Medical College of Virginia before earning her PhD in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Child Development from the University of North Dakota. Dr. Tillman has been providing assessment and counseling services to children, adolescents, and their families since 2001.

Dr. Tillman enjoys working with children and adolescents and  uses play therapy to work with children and early adolescents experiencing a variety of psychological difficulties. She also integrates therapeutic art, journaling, music, and other creative approaches into her work with children and teens. Dr. Tillman utilizes a collaborative, team-based, approach to treatment. She aims to help children and teens while also supporting the entire family. Additionally, Dr. Tillman was one of the first mental health clinicians to practice play therapy using telehealth. She has  been using teleplay therapy for over 6 years with children, adolescents, and families. At the beginning of stay-at-home orders for COVID-19, Dr. Tillman developed a needs assessment for play therapists that was administered to over 1,000 play therapists. The results were analyzed, and she promptly developed webinars to train play therapists on the foundations of tele-play therapy. The webinars were delivered live and room capacity was exceeded, necessitating repeat deliveries of the webinar services. Recorded versions were also made available to clinicians in other countries who could not attend due to significant time-zone differences. These foundational trainings were delivered free of charged and were able to reach over 5,000 play therapists across the world!

Dr. Tillman’s research and clinical expertise include grief and loss, non-suicidal self-injury in children and adolescents, complex childhood trauma, program development and evaluation (she has published play-based treatment manuals), treatment outcome research (she has published research on the effectiveness of play-based treatment programs for grief and loss and social skills), and group counseling. Dr. Tillman has published several research studies, treatment manuals (with Dr. Athena Drewes), and play-therapy book chapters (with Dr. David Crenshaw and Dr. Phyllis Post). She has also written curriculum for the New York Department of Health and the United Nations on how to respond to disasters and how to support children and families after mass casualty events. Dr. Tillman enjoys writing and publishing children’s books and frequently presents nationally and internationally. She has received state and national awards in the field of counseling innovation and psychological research and was recently awarded the state award for top 20 Professionals under the age of 40!
